330 | @aSince the early work of Gauss and Riemann, differential geometryhas grown into a vast network of ideas and approaches, encompassinglocal considerations such as differential invariants and jets as wellas global ideas, such as Morse theory and characteristic classes. Inthis volume of the Ettcyclopaedia, the authors give a tour of theprincipal areas and methods of modern differential geometry. Thebook is structured so that the reader may choose parts offlae text toread and still take away a completed picture of some area of differentialgeometry Beginning at the introductory level with curves in Euclideanspace, the sections become more challenging, arriving finally at theadvanced topics which form the greatest part of the book:transformation groups, the geometry of differential equations, geometric structures, the equivalence problem the geometry of ellipticoperators, G-structures and contact geometry. As an overview of themajor current methods of differential geometry, EMS 28 is a mapof these diftirent ideas which explains the interesting points at everystop. The authors' intention is that the reader should gain a newunderstanding of geometry from the process of reading Ihis survey. | |
